2011 Distinguished Service Award Winner

Hear from the ASA's Distinguished Service Award Recipient, Mark J. Lema, M.D., Ph.D. about his exemplary service to the organization and the field of anesthesiology as well as his vision for the profession in the future.

President

John M. Zerwas, M.D.

John M. Zerwas, M.D. currently serves as president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and is one of three doctors in the Texas House of Representatives. Dr. Zerwas serves on the board of U.S. Anesthesia Partners – a partnership which recently evolved from Greater Houston Anesthesiology, the practice he co-founded more than 15 years ago.

A member of ASA since 1987, Dr. Zerwas has served the Society in numerous roles. Most recently he served on the ASA Executive Committee and was elected as its first vice president in 2010 and president-elect in 2011. He also served as ASA assistant treasurer in 2003 and then as treasurer in 2006.

A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Zerwas has been actively involved in the medical community. He served as president of the Memorial Hermann Health Network Providers and chief medical officer of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System in Houston.

Dr. Zerwas has successfully blended a career in medicine with a career in politics. Elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2009 and 2011, Dr. Zerwas is serving his third term as chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services. He also is chair of the House Committee on General Investigating and Ethics and a member of the Committee on Human Services.  In July 2009 and 2011, Texas Monthly named him one of the “Ten Best Legislators” in Texas.
