Vice President for Professional Affairs

Norman A. Cohen, M.D.

Norman A. Cohen, M.D. currently serves as Vice President for Professional Affairs of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Dr. Cohen is an Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where he also is the department Medical Director for Professional Revenue Performance, President of the Faculty Senate for the University and Chair of the OHSU Managed Care Strategies Committee.

Dr. Cohen has served the Society in numerous positions. He was Chair of the Committee on Economics and is current Chair of the Committee on Future Models of Anesthesia Practice. Dr. Cohen also represented ASA on the American Medical Association (AMA) Relative Value Update Committee from 2000-2008, and has worked closely with ASA on issues related to accountable care organizations and new payment methodologies.

Dr. Cohen is the author of numerous articles and book chapters focusing on anesthesia and medical coding, practice management and evaluation. In recognition for his advocacy work on behalf of anesthesiology, Dr. Cohen received the Bertram Coffer Award for Excellence in Government in 2010.

A graduate of John Hopkins University for both his undergraduate and medical degrees, Dr. Cohen completed his anesthesiology training at Duke University, where he was Chief Resident in 1988. Dr. Cohen spent more than 15 years in private practice before returning to academics in 2007.
