Bevery K. Philip, M.D.

Beverly K. Philip, M.D., serves as the vice president for scientific affairs for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA®) and is professor of anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. She is a national and international leader in the field of ambulatory anesthesia and surgery, and is the founding director of the Day Surgery Unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Philip has been a member of ASA since 1974 and has served the Society in a number of roles. Most recently, she was chair of the Committee on Quality Management and Departmental Administration and was previously chair of ASA’s Committee on Scientific Advisory and the Committee on Ambulatory Surgical Care. Dr. Philip was chair of the ASA Annual Meeting for 2009. She has served as chair of the Joint Commission’s Ambulatory Health Care Professional and Technical Advisory Committee, and is on the Board of Directors and Standards Committee of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. She has also served on the CMS Advisory Panel on Ambulatory Payment Classification Groups and is editor-in-chief of the international journal, Ambulatory Surgery.  Dr. Philip has been president of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists, as well as a founding member and president of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia.

A graduate of Upstate Medical Center SUNY, Dr. Philip completed her residency and fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Philip has been recognized in her field with a number of awards and honors, including the Distinguished Service Award (2004), Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia and the James H. Nicoll Memorial Lecture (2013), International Association for Ambulatory Surgery.  Dr. Philip has published numerous research papers, review articles and book chapters on various aspects of ambulatory anesthesia practice. 

Dr. Philip and her husband live in Brookline, MA and have two sons. In her spare time she enjoys downhill telemark skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, dancing and inline skating.
