Who is eligible to be an ASA member?
Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathy who are licensed to practice medicine and who have successfully completed a training program in anesthesiology, accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent organizations, or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- A physician not in the clinical practice of anesthesiology.
- A scientist who, while not engaged in administering clinical anesthesia to humans, is nevertheless interested in anesthesiology.
- A physician who is in the service of the U.S. government (other than those employed by the Veterans Administration).
- A physician who resides outside the United States.
Resident Members (Includes Fellows)
A physician in full-time training in an anesthesiology department whose core residency program is accredited by ACGME or the AOA.
Medical Student Members
An individual in full-time training in a medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the AOA.
- Anesthesiologist assistant (AA/AA-C)
- Certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)
- Student anesthesiologist assistant
- Student registered nurse anesthetist

Am I required to join a component society?
Active, Affiliate (except international) and Resident ASA members in the United States must also join a component society. In most cases, your application to ASA will serve as your application for membership in a state component society.
Which component society should I join?
In general, you will be joining the component society where you conduct your primary practice. If you live in one state and practice or attend school in another, the component society should be the one where you practice or attend school. If you practice in more than one state, select the component society where you spend the most time in practice. In certain circumstances, special exceptions may be made. Contact ASA for more information.
Do I pay one set of dues for both?
No, your ASA dues and component society dues are collected by each organization separately.
Can I join more than one component society?
No, you can be a member of only one component society.
I am retiring. Can I continue my ASA membership?
Yes, you can apply for Retired membership status if:
- You have been an Active and/or Affiliate member for 20 or more years (excluding years as a Resident), and retired from practice.
- An Active and /or Affiliate member for 20 or more years (excluding years as a Resident), and have reached the age of 70.
- Active members of ASA who are disabled and therefore unable to engage in the practice of their profession for one year or more.
I don’t live in the United States. Can I still join ASA?
Yes, as an Affiliate Member who resides outside of the United States.
Does ASA offer a corporate membership?
No, ASA is an individual membership organization.

The ASA will notify your state or other component society of your pending application. Once the component society approves your application, ASA will send you notification of acceptance. In the case of international membership, component society membership is not required and ASA will notify you when your application has been approved.

How much are dues?
Dues vary depending on the type of membership:
Active Member: $665
Educational Student: $25
Medical Student: $10

How do I pay my ASA dues?
There are several ways to pay your ASA dues, whichever is most convenient for you:
- Pay with a credit card online. ASA accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
- Call 630-912-2552 and use a credit card by phone.
- Mail a check to: American Society of Anesthesiologists, 25423 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673-1254.
- Use the voucher on your ASA dues statement and submit according to the instructions on the voucher.

Governance and Volunteering at ASA
What is the governance structure at ASA?
ASA is governed by its House of Delegates. The House of Delegates comprises ASA delegates and directors (designated by geographic distribution), ASA officers, past presidents, the editor-in-chief of Anesthesiology, chairs of the Sections on Administration, Representation, Professional Standards, Professional Practice, Society Subspecialties, Education and Research, Annual Meeting and Clinical Care, and the ASA delegate to the AMA House of Delegates. The ASA House of Delegates meets each year during the Society's annual meeting.
During the interim between the meetings of the House of Delegates, the ASA Board of Directors exercises authority to manage the business and financial affairs of the Society, and superintends and directs the publication and distribution of all official documents, journals and reports consistent with policies of the House of Delegates. The board meets three times each year.
The Society also has many special committees of the nation's outstanding anesthesiologists. In addition, 55 component societies work to implement and complement the Society's goals at the community level.
There are approximately 126 people on the ASA staff in Schaumburg, Ill., and 22 in Washington, D.C.
How do I join an ASA committee?
The process for nominating and appointing ASA members to standing committees follows an annual cycle (roughly September to May) and includes review and input from ASA’s leadership, committee chairs and members, subspecialties and state component societies.
Nominations are welcome and encouraged. In early November, following the ASA annual meeting, self-nomination and colleague-nomination forms are posted to the ASA website in the members only section. Follow the instructions on the form to submit it to ASA. Curriculum vitas are not necessary but can be sent separately to the ASA executive office.
Only ASA members in good standing may serve as regular or adjunct members on ASA committees. This includes Active, Resident, Educational, Medical Student and Retired members and depends on the needs of the committee. Consultant members, review member and ex-officio members may be appointed as needed, and may or may not be ASA members.
