Advocacy Resources

The ASA Committee on Governmental Affairs has created numerous resources to assist ASA members in advocacy efforts.  In addition to utilizing these resources, please join the ASA Grassroots Network.

ASA Grassroots Advocacy Guide  - This grassroots advocacy guide provides all of the information ASA members to be effective advocates for the speciality.

Guide to Hosting a Site Visit  - This is a grassroots advocacy resource used by members who are interested in hosting an elected official or their staff for a site visit.

Advocacy Involvement Challenge  (Checklist)

At the 2011 “All Politics Is Local” ASA Legislative Conference, the Committee on Governmental Affairs launched the “Advocacy Involvement Challenge.”  The Advocacy Involvement Challenge is a new grassroots campaign designed to encourage ASA members to get more involved in grassroots advocacy.  As part of this challenge, ASA provided a list of 25 prime examples of ways members can help advocate for anesthesiology.

For each item a member completes, a point is awarded.  Those who complete tasks totaling 10 points or more will get an award and recognition at the ASA Annual Meeting in Chicago this year

This year, ASA’s Grassroots Network is placing a special focus on asking ASA members to host an elected official or their staff for a site visit.  Hosting a site visit is the most productive activity any ASA members can perform.  ASA has found that elected officials and candidates become significantly friendlier to issues affecting the practice of anesthesiology when they see what anesthesiologists do on a daily basis.  To encourage ASA members to do this activity, those who host a site visit will be awarded 5 points towards the Advocacy Involvement Challenge.

To track what members have done, at the beginning of October ASA will provide an online tool that members can use to inform ASA of the tasks they have completed.   All members of the ASA Grassroots Network will receive a link to this tool and the link will be placed on www.asahq.org.
