Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate
Key Information: In December 2011, the House and Senate passed a 2-month SGR fix for 2012 that averted a 27.4 percent Medicare payment cut to physicians set to occur on January 1, 2012. House and Senate Conference Committee members are meeting to address February 29, 2012 deadline.
ASA's Position on the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula: ASA supports full repeal of the SGR with replacement by a mechanism that accurately reflects the costs of providing care. Short of full repeal, ASA supports proposals that 1) provide for appropriate payment updates; 2) do not exacerbate projected future payment cuts and 3) begin to address the magnitude of the projected payment cuts – the “SGR debt.”
