ASA Launches Congressional Grassroots Campaign in Opposition to CMS Chronic Pain Proposal

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Urge your member of congress to contact the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to rescind the recent alarming CMS proposal to expand CRNA scope of practice to include chronic pain care. Participate now.

Follow the prompt to input your home zip code.  A phone number and talking points will be provided at the beginning of each of the three calls (your two Senators and one Representative).  To move to the next call, simply fill out the short form at the bottom of the page indicating the outcome of your call. Thank you for your advocacy efforts.

If you have any questions please email

CMS has proposed a new national policy to pay for chronic pain services delivered by providers who have no formal education or training in this specialized area of medicine.

As part of the formal regulatory comment period, ASA and thousands of physicians submitted comments opposing the proposal.  CMS is currently reviewing the comments and a final decision is expected to be announced in late October/early November.  ASA thanks those members who made their voices heard. Now is the time to engage your local lawmaker to also oppose this ill-advised proposal.

Chronic pain management is the practice of medicine, and properly trained physicians provide essentially all interventional pain services in the United States, including in rural and underserved areas. CMS’ proposal to use scarce Medicare dollars to expand coverage of nurse anesthetists’ services is fraught with risk to patients with no identifiable benefit to the Medicare program or to the patients served by the program. The proposal should be rejected.
