Summary:

Customer report of two Carpujects syringes containing more than the 1 mL labeled fill volume. Opioid pain medications such as morphine have life-threatening consequences if overdosed. Those consequences can include respiratory depression (slowed breathing or suspension of breathing), and low blood pressure.

Summary: FDA notified healthcare professionals and medical care organizations of the Class 1 recall of the listed AEDs which contain a component that may fail unexpectedly due to a defect. If the component were to fail during a rescue attempt, the AED may not deliver defibrillation therapy, causing serious adverse health consequences, including death. The unit’s self test may not detect the failure or impending failure of the component.

New ASA Ad Hoc Committee on ACOs

With the increasing interest in and emphasis on accountable care organizations (ACOs) as a potential model for recognizing savings under Medicare, ASA President Alexander A. Hannenberg, M.D. has identified a task force to address this issue in anticipation of a CMS proposed rule prior to year end.  Under the direction of Dr. Norm Cohen, this group will serve as ASA’s experts on ACOs and will work closely with the Washington staff to help formulate our position and develop relevant information for the membership.  The remaining members of the task force include Amr Abouleish, M.D., M.B.A., Arthur Boudreaux, M.D., Richard Dutton, M.D., M.B.A., Patrick Giam, M.D., James Hicks, M.D., Robert Johnstone, M.D., Sachin Kheterpal, M.D., M.B.A., Asa Lockhart, M.D., M.B.A., Gerald Maccioli, M.D., Douglas Merrill, M.D., M.B.A., Mark Neuman, M.D., Mike P.
