The ASA Committee on Practice Management perhaps is best recognized for its work planning the annual ASA conference on PRACTICE MANAGEMENT. This dynamic conference features leaders and experts in financial, regulatory and quality issues related to anesthesia practice, and provides opportunities for attendees to learn about key challenges, both present and future, facing our specialty. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT 2014 will take place January 24-26 in Dallas. At the time of this writing, conference planning is in full swing and will involve four pre-conferences on Friday, January 24 (Basics, Advanced, Perioperative Surgical Home, and Chronic Pain). The main conference, January 25-26, will feature additional topics such as Technology in Anesthesiology Practice and Emerging Payment Models for Anesthesiologists.

In addition to the conference, committee members volunteer their time on numerous other projects. The photo accompanying this article features most of the members of the Committee on Practice Management. In the rest of this article, some of them describe their work on behalf of ASA members.

1. A workgroup of the ASA Committee on Practice Management joined by representatives of the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants (AAAA) is creating a white paper on practice integration of anesthesiologist assistants (AAs). The goal of this document is to assist and inform practice leaders as they plan and execute both privileging and on-boarding of AAs into a practice. The document should be helpful to both physician-only and anesthesia care team practices. Both operational as well as strategic considerations are described. The document is in draft form at the present time and is being reviewed and vetted by other ASA committees, section leadership, AAAA leadership and the ASA Advocacy Office. Look for the publication of this document late in 2013 or early in 2014.

2. Last year’s PRACTICE MANAGEMENT 2013 pre-conference devoted significant time to the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model. This year’s plan is to have more PSH “how-to information” that can be implemented in your practice. In addition, the Committee on Practice Management is engaging national surgical organization leaders to collaborate with and support the development of the PSH. A joint working group with committees on Practice Management and Future Models of Anesthesia Practice is turning theory into practice.

3. Today’s residents are tomorrow’s leaders in anesthesiology. During the PRACTICE MANAGEMENT conference, the Resident Track aims to complement residents’ clinical training with education in practice management. This specially created agenda of lectures and interactive sessions prepares residents for the business side of their practice after graduation. The Resident Scholarship Program works with residency programs and state component societies to identify interested residents and sponsor their attendance at the conference. These joint sponsorships from forward-thinking state component societies, residency programs and practice management companies make the Resident Track a great resource and networking opportunity for the future leaders of our specialty.

4. Though in the early stages, a subcommittee is working to redesign the Practice Management area of the ASA website to make it as user-friendly and complete as possible. Ease of navigation will be paramount. When implemented, it will continue to evolve as we work to improve the presentation of existing material, maintain its currency, and add new information and guidance for members. The Practice Management subcommittee will work closely with our ASA professional staff on this project. There will be overlap with other website areas, particularly education, and we will integrate smoothly with these sections and the ASA website as a whole. We are sure the ASA membership will find the improvements to be welcome, useful and valuable.

5. The Committee on Practice Management is excited to be entering into the third year of its growing relationship with the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER). At the annual conference, FAER again will sponsor a competition for abstracts/research in practice management and will award prizes for the first-, second- and third-place abstracts. The Committee on Practice Management is grateful for FAER’s recognition of academic work in the field of practice management.

6. The Committee on Practice Management maintains a workgroup to develop strategies to address the company model, a practice model increasingly impacting anesthesiology practices around the country. The activities of the workgroup are described in more detail in the accompanying article by Judy Semo and Jay Mesrobian, M.D.

7. The Certificate in Business Administration (CBA) is one of the programs sponsored by the Committee on Practice Management. In its 13th year, the CBA teaches essential business foundation skills not taught in medical school or residency. In this rapidly changing health care environment, those attributes level the playing table and give one the knowledge to better define their next steps. It is a combination of on-site and distance learning; join us in Houston to take control of your future.
