This Issue's Top Story
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. announced that the Food and Drug Administration granted Premarket Approval for the SEDASYS® system, a computer-assisted personalized sedation system. ASA provided formal written and oral comments in 2009 to the FDA Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee regarding the SEDASYS® system, in which concerns were expressed regarding the patient safety implications of the device. Public information related to the premarket approval is currently under review by ASA and will be made available as soon as the review is completed.

ASA News

A study from the May issue of Anesthesiology discovered that spinal or epidural anesthesia was associated with fewer postoperative complications and death than general anesthesia in patients undergoing primary hip or knee replacement. The study was featured in Becker's ASC Review, Cornell Chronicle, Medicalxpress.com and Outpatient Surgery Magazine.

ASA members provide medical expertise in television segments
ASA member Anita Gupta, D.O. appeared in an NBC-10 Philadelphia segment on May 2 to explain how a combination approach of narcotics and pain procedures may be more effective for patients. Also, ASA member of the Committee on Communications Nina Singh-Radcliff, M.D. appeared in a Fox News segment on May 5 about the rising suicide rate among middle-aged Americans.
