Information on FTC "Red Flag Rules"

The Federal Trade Commission issued a set of regulations in November 2007, the “Red Flag Rules,” requiring certain entities to develop and implement policies to detect and prevent identity theft. Though organizations such as ASA and the AMA vehemently opposed application of this regulation to physicians, the FTC deemed that many physicians are “creditors” and covered.

Since the delayed implementation date of May 1, 2009, is quickly approaching, here are some reference documents from the AMA to help physicians incorporate an identity theft program into existing policies and procedures.
