Sainte Therese Hospital, Hinche - Haiti
Haiti
Duration:
06/17/2012
until 06/24/2012
Clinical Focus: General Surgery
Mission Details
We are in need of an attending anesthesiologist and two CRNAs during the week of June 17-24th 2012. Our faculty-student collaborative has been traveling to Sainte Therese Hospital in rural Haiti annually for the past 5 years. The patient population is in great need, as the hospital often goes months without proper surgical/anesthesia coverage. We aim to run 5 cases per day. We try to get use our of the OR from 7am-7pm. We perform urological and general surgery cases; mostly open prastatectomies, orchiectomies, suprapubic catheter placements, herniorrhaphies, hydrocelectomies and various other general cases. We try to do most cases under spinal anesthesia but do use general anesthesia when needed. Emory University medical students perform the patient work-ups and provide post-operative care with the assistance of a team of ICU nurses, under direct supervision of the trip attending physicians.
Facilities
Sainte Therese Hospital has two Operating Rooms and two 12-bed surgical wards. This hospital is the main referral hospital for the central plateau region of Haiti.
Teaching Opportunity: Ten Emory medical students (ranging from MS2 to MS4 year) will be on the team. Teaching is heavily emphasized within the OR, on the wards and during evening discussions. In addition, we strive to leave Hinche at the end of the week having contributed something sustainable. For the past two years, this has come in the form of attending lectures/discussions with hospital physicians and staff.
