This Issue's Top Story
ASA response to New York Times article published
ASA developed and submitted a letter to the editor (LTE) from ASA President John M. Zerwas, M.D. in response to the New York Times article " The $2.7 Trillion Medical Bill: Colonoscopies Explain Why U.S. Leads the World in Health Expenditures." The article detailed the varying cost of colonoscopies, and invokes the cost of anesthesia services and challenges the medical necessity of these services related to colonoscopies. Dr. Zerwas' LTE was published in the New York Times on Friday, June 7.

ASA News
FDA reports propofol shortage is resolved
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially moved propofol injections from the list of drugs currently in shortage to the list of resolved drug shortages. While the FDA has indicated that propofol is currently available, it may take time for facilities to secure the product as it moves through the supply chain. Read more.

ASA responded to the latest request for additional feedback from the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce by stating that a precursor to the development of any form of SGR repeal and replacement is "acknowledgment and remedy" of anesthesiology's "33 percent problem." ASA also advocated for five years or more of payment stability prior to the implementation of any new system and that a mechanism be created to extend the period if there is "a lack of developed measures or inadequate quality infrastructure." Your participation is requested for the 2013 ASA Commercial Conversion Factor Survey. Results will be published in the ASA NEWSLETTER later this year. Data provided must be at least three months old. Take the survey today!

On June 5, 2013, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hosted a National Provider Call on "Getting Started With PQRS Reporting: Implications for the Value-Based Payment Modifier." In order to avoid a negative Value-Based Payment Modifier adjustment in 2015 (with performance period of 2013), anesthesia groups of 100 or more eligible professionals must sign up for, or "self-nominate" for, the 2013 Physician Quality Reporting System program through the Group Payment Reporting Option.
