Interim Meeting Summary |
The ASA Board of Directors held its interim meeting in Chicago
on Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, 1996. The Board committees
on Administrative Affairs, Finance, Legislative Review and Scientific
Affairs met as reference committees on Saturday to review reports
for consideration by the Board of Directors on Sunday. Among the
actions taken by the Board of Directors were the following:
ASA Political Action Committee (ASAPAC)
Received information that 1,983 ASA members contributed a total
of $263,916 to ASAPAC during the year ending September 30, 1995.
The Board approved insertion of ASAPAC solicitation pamphlets
in the registration packets for the 1996 ASA Annual Meeting and
also approved construction of an expanded ASAPAC booth in the
exhibit hall.
Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research
Received information that the endowment fund continues to increase
at an impressive rate. During 1995, funding was provided for seven
research starter grants, two anesthesiology research fellowships
and two educational research grants. Thirty-seven applications
are now being reviewed for 1996 Young Investigator Awards.
Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM)
Received information that in 1995 the WLM responded to more than
1,000 requests for information, reference materials and bibliographic
works. Although the majority of these requests have come from
ASA members, one of interest was received from NASA, requesting
information on providing anesthesia for chick embryos in space.
Practice Management Conference
Received information that ASA's second Practice Management Conference,
held in New Orleans on January 13-14, was attended by 484 individuals.
Plans are currently under way to hold a third conference next
winter.
AMA Council Positions
Approved an expenditure of $10,000 to support ASA members seeking
positions on two American Medical Association (AMA) councils.
Rebecca J. Patchin, M.D., is a candidate for the AMA Council on
Medical Education, and Glenn F. Zurawski, M.D., is a candidate
for the AMA Council on Constitution and Bylaws.
Practice Parameters
Received information that the following practice parameters are
scheduled for completion by October 1996:
- Preoperative Evaluation
- Chronic Pain Management
The Board also approved a recommendation to begin development
on the following new practice parameters:
- Obstetrical Anesthesia
- Perioperative Fasting
Annual Meeting Site - 2008
Selected Orlando, Florida, as the location of the ASA Annual Meeting
in October 2008. Las Vegas was confirmed as the Annual Meeting
site for 2004.
1996 Budget
Amended the 1996 budget to provide for income of $15,137,350 and
expenses of $14,806,100.
ASA Media Award
Approved a recommendation to authorize two annual media awards
beginning in 1996, with one given for video productions and the
other given for print or radio productions.
Annual Meeting Communications Exhibit
Approved a recommendation to update and increase the size of the
communications exhibit for use in the 1996 ASA Annual Meeting
exhibit hall. The booth's theme will be "150 Years of Communications:
From W.T.G. Morton to the World Wide Web."
Excellence in Research Award
Approved a recommendation that all recipients of the ASA Excellence
in Research Award be listed in the annual ASA Directory of Members.
Ether Day 1996
Approved distribution of a poster with the July ASA NEWSLETTER
mailing, depicting the last 150 years of anesthesia achievements.
Plans for the poster will be coordinated with the Massachusetts
Society of Anesthesiologists, which is planning a three-day event
in Boston on October 15-17, 1996.
Liaison Representatives
Elected Ellison C. Pierce, Jr., M.D., to a one-year term as Representative
to the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. David E. Lees,
M.D., was elected to a three-year term as Representative to the
National Fire Protection Association.
William N. Bernhard, M.D., was elected to a four-year term as
Representative to the American Association for Respiratory Care
Board of Medical Advisors. Neal H. Cohen, M.D., was elected to
a four-year term as Representative to the National Board for Respiratory
Care.
John R. Cooper, M.D., and Steven C. Hall, M.D., were elected to
four-year terms on the ABA-ASA Joint Council on In-Training Examinations,
and Phillip W. Lebowitz, M.D., was appointed to complete a partial
term on the Joint Council. Sean K. Kennedy, M.D., was elected
to a three-year term as Representative to the Association of Operating
Room Nurses.
Ronald A. Gabel, M.D., was elected Delegate and Steven D. Small,
M.D., was elected Alternate Delegate for four-year terms on the
Joint Commission-Hospital Accreditation Program, PTAC. Burton
S. Epstein, M.D., was elected to a three-year term as Representative
to the Residency Review Committee for Anesthesiology.
Norman Levin, M.D., was nominated for a three-year term as ASA
Representative to the AMA CPT-4 Editorial Panel. Julien F. Biebuyck,
M.D., Carl C. Hug, Jr., M.D., Carol L. Lake, M.D., and Melville
Q. Wyche, Jr., M.D., were elected to new three-year terms as Representatives
to the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER).
Charles W. Otto, M.D., was elected to complete a vacancy on the
FAER Board expiring in October 1997.
Michael L. Good, M.D., was elected to a one-year term as Representative
to the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee F-29.
Henri S. Havdala, M.D., was elected to a one-year term as Representative
to the AMA Professional Liability Coordination Project. Stephen
Slogoff, M.D., Doris K. Cope, M.D., and William D. Hammonds, M.D.,
were elected to three-year terms as Trustees of the Wood Library-Museum
of Anesthesiology.
Joy L. Hawkins, M.D., was elected to a one-year term as Representative
to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee
on Obstetric Practice.
Neil Swissman, M.D., Joanne Jene, M.D., and Roger A. Moore, M.D.,
were elected to three-year terms on the Executive Board of the
ASA Political Action Committee (ASAPAC). William D. Hetrick, M.D.,
was elected to complete a term expiring in October 1997. Roger
W. Litwiller, M.D., was elected Chair of ASAPAC for a one-year
term, and Roger A. Moore, M.D., was elected Secretary-Treasurer
for a one-year term.
