1,201 Papers Selected for 1996 Scientific Program

John R. Moyers, M.D., Chair
Committee on Scientific Papers

The Committee on Scientific Papers has selected 1,201 papers for presentation during the scientific program at the 1996 Annual Meeting. Fourteen subcommittees and their chairs have worked diligently to select the abstracts for presentation from among all the fine papers submitted. The subcommittees and their chairs are:

1. J. Lance Lichtor, M.D. -- Ambulatory and Geriatric Anesthesia
2. Kenneth J. Tuman, M.D. -- Clinical Circulation
3. David S. Smith, M.D. -- Clinical Neurosciences
4. Douglas B. Coursin, M.D. -- Critical Care
5. Randall L. Carpenter, M.D. -- Drug Disposition and Anesthetic Action
6. Stanley J. Aukburg, M.D. -- Equipment, Monitoring and Engineering Technology
7. Donn M. Dennis, M.D. -- Experimental Circulation
8. Darrell L. Tanelian, M.D. -- Experimental Neurosciences and Biochemistry
9. James C. Crews, M.D. -- Local Anesthesia and Pain
10. Isaac Azar, M.D. -- Neuromuscular Transmission
11. Lee S. Perrin, M.D. -- Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology
12. Arnold J. Berry, M.D. -- Patient Safety, Practice Management, History and Education
13. Steven C. Hall, M.D. -- Pediatric Anesthesia
14. Jeffrey B. Gross, M.D. -- Respiration

The papers were of exceptionally high quality this year, making the job of selection particularly difficult for the subcommittees. Those that were chosen cover a wide range of topics within the field of anesthesiology. They encompass such subjects as the history of anesthesia, resident education, clinical investigations in pain and molecular biological aspects of anesthesiology. Of the 2,232 abstracts submitted, more than half were selected by the committee.

As at previous Annual Meetings, the papers will be grouped into oral, poster and poster discussion sessions. At each of the 21 oral sessions, eight to 12 papers will be presented. The 25 poster discussion sessions will last 90 minutes and consist of eight posters. The last hour of those sessions will be devoted to analysis of the investigations by the moderator and invited discussants. Thirty-one poster sessions are planned with 20 to 30 posters at each venue.

The subcommittee chairs not only directed the grading and selection of the abstracts in their area but grouped similar papers together in each of the sessions. Papers of like topics will be positioned adjacent to each other within the poster sessions, and each of the oral sessions will contain papers of a similar nature. Subcommittee chairs also aided in assigning moderators, discussants and facilitators knowledgeable in the areas presented within their sessions. We hope this will help achieve the goal of bringing scientists of similar interest together to share their work and ideas.

There has been an interest in the past few years in increasing the number of poster sessions at the Annual Meeting while maintaining the importance and vitality of the oral presentations. The Committee on Scientific Papers plans to continue this trend and expand the concept of facilitators for the poster sessions that was begun at the 1995 meeting. Each of the poster sessions will have facilitators at the meeting this year. As mentioned previously, posters of a similar nature will be grouped together at each session. Furthermore, within each session, there will be subgrouping of the posters.

The authors will be asked to take the facilitators and the audience through their poster, and then facilitators, working in pairs, will lead discussion of each poster with the authors and the audience. The intent is to create the atmosphere of a "mini classroom" and promote scientific debate and interaction. The facilitators will be identified by a ribbon on their name badge. The Committee on Scientific Papers is excited about continuing the facilitator program for the poster sessions and is interested in feedback to refine the concept.

The Residents' Research Essay Contest winners will present their papers on Monday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Morial Convention Center, Room 61. The 1996 Journal Symposium papers on perioperative stroke, encephalomyelopathy and cognitive dysfunction will be held on Tuesday, October 22.

With the efforts of Frank W. Connell, ASA Director of Scientific Affairs, and others at the ASA Executive Office, the committee has done its best to avoid conflicts among scientific paper presentations and with panels, workshops and the Clinical Forum Program. All ASA members are invited to review and discuss the scientific work selected, which will cover a variety of topics and be presented by investigators from the United States and many other countries.

John R. Moyers, M.D., is Professor of Anesthesia, University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, Iowa.
