ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education programs
for physicians.
ASA designates this continuing medical education program for 10
credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award
of the American Medical Association.
Registration is suggested by August 6, 1996. Registration fees
are $250 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and
$600 for nonmembers.
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Westin Hotel Chicago.
This location places attendees within walking distance of museums,
restaurants, galleries, theaters and shopping. A room reservation
form will be sent upon registration for the meeting. The form
should be returned directly to the hotel by August 16, 1996.

Julien F. Biebuyck, M.B., Chair, ASA Committee on Research, has
announced that the committee has awarded prizes for the following
three entries in the 1996 ASA Residents' Research Essay Contest:
First Prize:
Latha Hebbar, M.D., Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative
Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South
Carolina, "Negative and Selective Effects of Propofol on
Isolated Myocyte Contractile Function in Pacing-Induced Congestive
Heart Failure (CHF)."
Second Prize:
Reema Sanghvi, M.D., Department of Anesthesiology, University
of California, San Diego, California, "Effect of Halothane
on the Spinal Release of Amino Acids and Prostanoids."
Third Prize:

Uni-versity of New York, Buffalo, New York, "The Role of
Reactive Oxygen Species in Oxygen-Related Injury Following Acid
Aspiration."
The prize winners will receive a plaque and cash award to acknowledge
their achievement.
The three winners will present their papers at an awards ceremony
and oral scientific presentation during the ASA Annual Meeting
in New Orleans on Monday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in
the Morial Convention Center, Room 61.
ASA Patient Safety Videotape No. 25 on Sedation and Analgesia
Ellison C. Pierce, Jr., M.D.,
Executive Producer
ASA Patient Safety Videotape Series
The recently developed ASA Practice Guidelines for Sedation
and Analgesia by Non-Anesthesiologists inspired the production
of ASA Patient Safety Videotape No. 25, "Sedation and Analgesia
by Non-Anesthesiologists," which will be ready for distribution
by Glaxo Wellcome Inc. in the summer. In this film, "sedation
and analgesia" is defined, and the point is made that a primary
cause of morbidity associated with sedation/analgesia is drug-induced
respiratory or cardiovascular depression.
Three case scenarios tell the importance of patient monitoring
and of dose titration when combining sedative and analgesic agents
in order to avoid adverse outcomes. The film recommends preprocedure
evaluation and patient monitoring during and after the procedure
and also addresses discharge criteria. It emphasizes the adequate
education of individuals administering sedation/analgesia regarding
the pharmacology of the agents used and the pharmacologic reversal
in patients who become hypoxic or apneic during sedation/ analgesia.
Lastly, the practitioner is reminded to be alert to the continuing
risk for development of complications at the conclusion of sedation/analgesia
cases.
The ASA Committee on Patient Safety and Risk Management produced
the videotape. The practice guidelines were written by the ASA
Committee on Practice Parameters Task Force on Sedation and Analgesia
by Non-Anesthesiologists and were endorsed by the American Society
of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). The film's producers, Jeffrey
B. Gross, M.D., and Burton S. Epstein, M.D., were joined by Gregory
Zuccaro, Jr., M.D., Chair of the ASGE Standards of Practice Committee
and head of the Section of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Department
of Gastroenterology, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.
We urge anesthesiologists, gastrointestinal endoscopists and all
other nonanesthesiologists who would administer sedation and analgesia
to see this videotape.
St. Louis to Host November Workshop
The ASA Workshop on Perioperative Assessment and Management will
be held at the Marriott Pavilion Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri,
on November 16-17, 1996. The program has been designed for practitioners
who evaluate and care for surgical patients during the pre-, intra-
and postoperative periods.
Sessions will be devoted to preoperative risk assessment, focusing
on specific disease entities and selection of appropriate laboratory
testing, primarily on noncritical care patients. The impact of
value-based anesthesia care on the intraoperative and post-anesthesia
periods will be discussed. Sessions will also highlight the skills
needed for operating room leadership and for the development of
administrative and managerial expertise necessary to promote the
anesthesiologist's role as a perioperative physician.
After completing this workshop, participants should be familiar
with current cost-effective preoperative testing in ambulatory
and hospitalized patients; be able to identify perioperative risk
factors as they relate to the pathophysiology of common diseases;
be knowledgeable of the impact that anesthetic choice has on patient
recovery and outcomes; and understand the skills needed to participate
in leadership, administrative and managerial roles as a perioperative
physician.
Rebecca S. Twersky, M.D., is the program chair. She will speak
on "Medical-Legal Implications of Periop-erative Assessment"
and "Perioperative Management: The PACU." Other faculty
members and their topics are:
* Stephen P. Fischer, M.D., "Practical Approaches to Preoperative
Evaluation" and "Pitfalls in Managing a Preoperative
Anesthesia Clinic";
* Barbara S. Gold, M.D., "Preoperative Cardiac Risk Assessment
and Testing"and "Abnormal Preoperative Coagulation Tests";
* Reuven L. Pasternak, M.D., "Practice Guidelines for Preanesthesia
Assessment" and "Choices in Routine Preoperative Testing:
Medical and Fiscal Realities";
* Peter Rock, M.D., "Perioperative Management of the Patient
with Lung Disease" and "Patient With a New Left Bundle
Branch Block"; and
* Denham S. Ward, M.D., Ph.D., "Budget Cuts in an Anesthesia
Department," "Value-Based Anesthesia Care" and
"Taking the Leadership Role in Operative Services Management."
