Grant Recipient Named |
The FAER Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jerome
M. Klafta, M.D., University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, has
been awarded a 1996 FAER Educational Research Grant. His project
is titled "The Impact of a Specialized Preoperative Teaching
Videotape on Patient Outcome." Dr. Klafta's proposal described
his project as follows:
The objective of this project is to determine if preoperative
teaching using a specialized educational videotape increases patient
satisfaction, improves efficiency of the preoperative interview,
shortens length of stay, enhances estimation of the role of anesthesiologists
or influences choice of anesthesia in patients undergoing major
orthopedic surgery. Integral to this project is the randomized
testing of a newly developed, specialized videotape utilizing
feedback from patients who have viewed existing videotapes and
patients who have recently undergone joint replacement surgery.
This new videotape will incorporate the best of existing art in
this area and be tailored to provide information targeted to this
type of surgical procedure.
The forum of an educational videotape is also an avenue for
educating patients about the important role that anesthesiologists
play as perioperative physicians, a role that patients frequently
do not appreciate. Improved patient perception of the importance
of our work may benefit the specialty. This project will initiate
a process to improve patient education and to assess its impact
upon important clinical variables.
Highlights of FAER Board of Directors Meeting
On May 16, 1996, the FAER Board of Directors held a meeting in
Boston in conjunction with the Association of University Anesthesiologists
(AUA), a Grand Sponsor of FAER programs. The AUA has announced
a major increase in its support of FAER, with a pledge to donate
$50,000 per year for three years. The FAER Board of Directors
sincerely appreciates this recognition of the value of FAER grants
to the career development of anesthesiologists.
As of January 1, 1997, the FAER Young Investigator Award will
be renamed the FAER New Investigator Award. In addition, at that
time, the limitation on previous experience will state that applicants
must be "within six years of completing the CA-3 year."
The workload for the ASA Committee on Research in reviewing the
applications for FAER Anesthesiology Research Fellowships, Research
Starter Grants and Young Investigator Awards has grown over the
past few years. The FAER Board of Directors has decided to limit
candidates to one reapplication on the same topic within two years
of the first proposal. This restriction will be stated in any
rejection letters sent from the FAER Office.
The Board discussed an appropriate sequence of FAER grants for
individuals interested in applying for more than one program en
route to National Institutes of Health funding. A logical order
would be as follows:
1. Anesthesiology Research Fellowship
2. Research Starter Grant
3. Young (New) Investigator Award
A major discussion topic at the meeting was FAER's role in supporting
clinical research. Some project proposals for clinical research
have been received for Research Starter Grants and Young Investigator
Awards. The Board wants to encourage more applications for clinical
research projects. Detailed information on this effort will be
published following the October FAER Board meeting.
Copies of the FAER 1995 Annual Report were sent to approximately
1,500 anesthesiologists in May 1996. If you would like to receive
a copy, please contact Cynthia King, FAER Assistant Director,
at (507) 266-6866 or by e-mail: <king.cynthia@mayo.edu>.
