Jeffery S. Vender, M.D., Chair
Committee on Refresher Courses

This year's Refresher Course Lecture and Clinical Update Program promises to maintain the high standards of the past and provide the highlight sessions for this year's ASA Annual Meeting. The Refresher Course Lectures will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, with the Clinical Update presentations on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 20-22.

This year's program of 99 lectures offers a large diversity of topics covering all aspects of clinical care as well as more recent changes in the socioeconomic practice of anesthesiology. Topics including the recent changes incurred by the growth of managed care and its impact on staffing, compensation, and management and cost-containment initiatives will be discussed in 13 different lectures.

James F. Arens, M.D., will discuss the strategies necessary to negotiate with managed care contract holders. Neal H. Cohen, M.D., will highlight the reformation of health care and its impact on anesthesia. Mark A. Warner, M.D., and Frank J. Villamaria, M.D., will address cost-containment issues, and Stephen J. Thomas, M.D., will present an economic overview for anesthesia. Karen S. Sibert, M.D., and Patricia A. Kapur, M.D., will review operating room management in the acute care and ambulatory setting. The mysteries and applications of the Internet for the anesthesia care provider will be elucidated by Keith J. Ruskin, M.D., as he addresses the wonders of "surfing the 'Net."

The role of the perioperative physician will be highlighted by nine talks. Thomas W. Feeley, M.D., will critique the new roles and challenges of the anesthesiologist as a perioperative physician. Charles J. Coté, M.D., will discuss the preoperative preparation of the pediatric patient. Michael F. Roizen, M.D., will look at the present state of preoperative testing. Lee A. Fleisher, M.D., William T. Peruzzi, M.D., Charise T. Petrovitch, M.D., Robert N. Sladen, M.B., Douglas B. Coursin, M.D., and Robert K. Stoelting, M.D., will review the perioperative management issues of various organ systems or functions.

Twelve lectures will address various aspects of pharmacology. Bruce F. Cullen, M.D., Kayser Enneking, M.D., Peter S.A. Glass, M.D., Roberta L. Hines, M.D., Richard F. Kaplan, M.D., Evan D. Kharasch, M.D., Aaron F. Kopman, M.D., Carl E. Rosow, M.D., and Theodore H. Stanley, M.D., will highlight the utilization and controversies of various anesthetic and cardiovascular drugs in adult and pediatric patients.

Ambulatory anesthesia for the adult and pediatric patient in the acute care, freestanding and office-based setting will be discussed. Management, anesthetic techniques and controversies will be addressed by Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum, M.D., Philip G. Boysen, M.D., Raafat S. Hannallah, M.D., Rebecca S. Twersky, M.D., and Paul F. White, M.D.

Pain management has dramatically expanded the role of the anesthesiologist outside the operating suite. Seven lectures will address a vast array of pain topics, including interventional pain procedures, evaluation, outcome, pain management for the nonpain specialist, adult versus pediatric pain management, acute versus chronic pain management and the development of a pain center. Speakers include Charles B. Berde, M.D., Timothy R. Deer, M.D., James C. Eisenach, M.D., F. Michael Ferrante, M.D., Michael F. Mulroy, M.D., John C. Rowlingson, M.D., and Carol A. Warfield, M.D.

An outstanding field of pediatric experts, including Valerie A. Arkoosh, M.D., Ann G. Bailey, M.D., Frederic A. Berry, M.D., Steven C. Hall, M.D., Linda Jo Rice, M.D., and Henry Rosenberg, M.D. (in addition to previously mentioned speakers), will share their expertise in 12 lectures. In addition, Shirley A. Graves, M.D., will address the topic of pediatric anesthesia for the nonpediatric hospital.

Other areas specifically selected for the 1997 meeting include: 18 lectures on cardiovascular, 12 critical care, five respiratory, two trauma and five airway lectures. A significant number of our lectures have multiple category application and should address the interests of our diverse membership.

We are fortunate to have gathered an outstanding field of experts to share their knowledge and experience with our membership. We hope to provide a diverse program, fulfilling the various needs of those attending while addressing many of the controversies surrounding our specialty. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego.
