Anesthesiology: Leaders Describe
Career Path in Their Own Words |
Elliott V. Miller, M.D., Trustee and Past President
Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology
Three distinguished anesthesiologists autographed copies of the
newly released Volume I of Careers in Anesthesiology at
the Wood Library-Museum (WLM) exhibit in October during the ASA
Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.
Eli M. Brown, M.D., William K. Hamilton, M.D., and Emanuel
M. Papper, M.D., have each distinguished themselves with their
major contributions to our specialty. Each has told his story
in a different way and from a different perspective, which adds
to the interest of this book. Present-day readers will find their
attention riveted to the pages as the development of modern anesthesia
unfolds in the words of these leaders in the specialty. Historians
will find valuable source materials that are not available elsewhere.
People from around the world lined up to have their copy
of Careers in Anesthesiology autographed in San Diego at
the WLM exhibit, which highlighted the 150th anniversary of obstetrical
anesthesia. Drs. Brown, Hamilton and Papper happily signed numerous
copies brought to them by old friends and many younger anesthesiologists
eager to meet the legendary figures. The autographing session,
which was enthusiastically received, followed the Emery A. Rovenstine
Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 20.
B. Raymond Fink, M.D., Chair of the WLM Publications Committee,
conceived the new Careers in Anesthesiology series. This
written series adds great detail and depth to the information
available in the John William Pender Oral History Collection of
more than 120 videotaped interviews available through the WLM.
Donald Caton, M.D., President of the WLM Board of Trustees,
arranged the recent autographing session and will arrange another
for the 1998 ASA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, when Volumes
II and III of Careers in Anesthesiology will be available
for purchase. To obtain a copy of Volume I or to inquire about
future volumes of this series, contact the Wood Library-Museum
