FAER REPORT
|
| Results of Survey
of Former Award Recipients |
An article tracking the careers of former recipients was accepted
for publication in the February 1998 issue of Anesthesiology.
The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Board
of Directors thanks the authors, editors and respondents for contributing
to this work. The survey represents the Foundation's data-based
effort to document what is accomplished by FAER funding of research.
There were almost 300 recipients, and 230 (80 percent)
responded. Seventy-six percent of those are still in academic
medicine, 55 percent at associate or full professor rank. The
median time these recipients spend in research is 30 percent,
and each has mentored an average of four people. The return on
investment in terms of extramural funding is 17:1. For every dollar
FAER spent, $17 were generated from the National Institutes of
Health or other sources. FAER spent less than $6 million and,
to date, these researchers have subsequently received more than
$100 million from other funding sources.
The goals of the ASA Committee on Research and FAER include
the encouragement of academic anesthesiology careers and the facilitation
of research. The survey demonstrates that in aggregate, the award
recipients have achieved what was expected. Their achievements
offer strong incentives for the continued support of the FAER
programs. Please read the report carefully and send your comments
and suggestions to the FAER office. We plan to conduct another
survey in the year 2000.
ASA Component Societies
One of the Foundation's goals in 1997 was involvement
with as many component societies as possible. Thirty-one component
societies contributed to FAER. The Foundation continued to receive
donations from long-time contributors like California, Florida,
Georgia, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and
Wisconsin. States that contributed for the first time in several
years or the first time ever included Alabama, Kansas, Michigan,
Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina and
Virginia. The societies generated about $55,000 in donations for
the Foundation, which was more than in any previous year. These
dollars increase the FAER endowment, moving the Foundation toward
financial independence. We thank all these societies and would
like feedback on what FAER can do to broaden communication with
them.
We especially thank the Minnesota, Iowa and Tennessee
societies. Minnesota contributed almost $20 per member, and Iowa
and Tennessee each gave about $10 per member. All three societies
have been long-time supporters of FAER. By their generosity, these
societies in particular demonstrate their conviction that investment
in the human resource is a high priority in maintaining a competitive
health care and biotechnology industry, and ultimately, advancing
the care of patients.
Lippincott-Raven Publishers Agreement
The Foundation seeks to form relations with other contributors
and welcomes innovative ideas and suggestions. In 1997, the authors
and Lippincott-Raven Publishers entered into an agreement with
FAER whereby a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Anesthesia:
Biologic Foundations will be donated to FAER. We appreciate
this new endeavor and hope other authors, editors and publishers
will consider similar agreements.
ASA Committee on Research
In January, the ASA Committee on Research reviewed 19
applications for the New Investigator Award and two for the Anesthesiology
Research Fellowship. The Educational Research Study Section reviewed
one Educational Research Grant application. The FAER Board will
make decisions on funding at its May meeting, and announcements
will be made in a summer edition of the ASA NEWSLETTER.
The next award application deadline is July 31, 1998, for
the Research Starter Grant, the Clinical Research Starter Grant,
the Anesthesiology Research Fellowship and the Educational Research
Grant.
