| 1998 Art Exhibit:
Special Recognition for Children of ASA Members |
John T. Bonner, M.D., Chair
Committee on Art Exhibits
When asking some ASA members what they are going to submit to
this year's art show, I often hear, "I'm not really an artist."
Actually, I believe we are all artists, for we see, hear and feel
in a way that is unique to each of us. These expressions of our
individuality have been gifts that have made the ASA Art Exhibit
one of the more exciting events at the ASA Annual Meeting. Founded
in 1967 by Joyce Sumner, M.D., the show has provided a showcase
for works that display the creativity in each of us.
In these times of intense professional commitments, it
is even more important to acknowledge the hobbies and diversions
that balance our lives and give us perspective. A former Chair
of the Committee on Art Exhibits, Ezzat I. Abouleish, M.D., once
said, "Each show is similar to a birthing; after months of preparation,
the show emerges as a one-of-a-kind creation." I have found the
ASA Art Exhibit to be a window through which I see different facets
of the exhibitors' lives and breadth of experience and thought.
The displayed artwork at the Annual Meeting is truly a gift to
all of us.
This year's theme is "Sun and Water," chosen by the Committee
on Art Exhibits as appropriate to the location for the 1998 Annual
Meeting in Orlando. The committee particularly encourages junior
exhibitors to submit artwork, which will be displayed in a designated
area of the exhibit. Each junior exhibitor will receive special
recognition in the form of a specially designed T-shirt and an
invitation to the reception, to be held on Sunday, October 18,
1998, at 5:30 p.m. All children of ASA members under age 18 are
qualified to enter as junior exhibitors.
As in previous years, the categories include painting,
photography (including digitally enhanced images), graphic works,
sculpture, crafts and literature. Any work suitable for display
submitted by ASA members or their families will be accepted. Some
of the more exciting works in previous shows have included crafts
from found objects, woodworking, weaving, needlework and pottery.
The judges are three Professors of Art: Gary Baker from
Polk College, Winter Haven and Lakeland, Florida, and Anita Wooten
and Michael Galletta from Valencia College, Orlando, Florida.
They will award ribbons in all categories, including a category
that applies to the show theme, and they will select the "Best
in Show." Marijane Osborn, Ph.D., Professor of English at the
University of California-Davis, will judge the literature. We,
the viewers, will vote for the Viewers' Choice, to be chosen at
the end of the show.
The Art Exhibit will be in a well-marked, secure area
of the Orlando/Orange County Convention Center and will be open
from noon on Sunday, October 18, to the close of the exhibit at
4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20. The reception, to which all who
enter work will receive an invitation, will be at 5:30 p.m. on
Sunday, October 18. Artists should ship or bring their work to
the Convention Center no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday, October
17, when the Committee on Art Exhibits will assemble and display
the show. To obtain guidelines and entry blanks, please write
to John T. Bonner, M.D., Chair, Committee on Art Exhibits, American
Society of Anesthesiologists, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge,
IL 60068-2573.
Both the theme of "Sun and Water" and the participation by
junior exhibitors promise to be a fitting continuation of the successful
1997 show whose theme was "Mother and Child." Children at Emory
University's Department of Anesthesiology have already competed
to create the logo of this year's show. As an adult exhibitor, I
feel challenged by the enthusiasm and creativity of these children.
Let us meet the challenge and make the 1998 ASA Art Exhibit a jewel
that shares the experiences of our careers and lives.
John T. Bonner, M.D., is Associate Professor
of Anesthesiology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta,
Georgia.
