News: 1998 PSA Distinguished Service Award Recipient |
The Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA) 1998 Distinguished
Service Award was presented to Peter M. Winter, M.D., at its Annual
Membership Meeting on March 31, 1998. The PSA award was presented
in recognition of Dr. Winter's distinguished record as a teacher
and researcher and his outstanding service to the specialty of
anesthesiology.
Dr. Winter received his undergraduate medical training
at the University of Rochester and, in 1965, completed his anesthesiology
residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1979,
Dr. Winter moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and became Chair
of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Winter held this position until 1997. While Chair at the University
of Pittsburgh, Dr. Winter helped to establish the specialties
of anesthesiology and critical care medicine within the medical
community of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Winter's other achievements include the publication
of more than 150 scholarly articles, lectures across the country,
teaching as a visiting professor at universities in the United
States, England and China, a member of three scientific journal
editorial boards and a founding member of the Society of Critical
Care Medicine and the W.T.G. Morton Society. Dr. Winter has also
made many outstanding contributions to various fields such as
pulmonary pathophysiology, oxygen toxicity, deep sea diving, the
mechanism of action of inhalation anesthetics and education research
in anesthesiology residency training.
