FAER REPORT

FAER Awards Opportunities in Obstetrics, Geriatrics and Trauma

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) collaborations for award co-sponsorships with the International Trauma Anesthesia and Critical Care Society (ITACCS), the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) and the American Geriatric Society (AGS) will now allow us to accept applications for research in these areas beginning with the 1998 deadlines of July 31 and November 30.

American Geriatric Society

At the suggestion of G. Alec Rooke, M.D., Chair of the ASA Committee on Geriatrics, the Foundation participated in a conference on the expansion of the AGS/John A. Hartford Foundation Project, "Increasing Geriatrics Expertise in Nonprimary Care Specialties." Refunding for $1.5 million for the years 1997-2001 allows AGS to expand its target specialties to include anesthesiology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and thoracic surgery. The new phase of the project shares the following broad objectives of Phase I:

  • To improve the amount and quality of geriatric education received by medical and surgical residents.
  • To identify and support specialty faculty in promoting geriatric training and research within their own professional disciplines.
  • To assist professional certifying bodies and professional societies in improving the ability of their constituencies to care for elderly patients.
Securities and Bequests

FAER has received a donation of appreciated securities from two anesthesiologists on behalf of SOAP. The SOAP Board has voted to give a matching gift to FAER. As for bequests, FAER has received notification from four individuals indicating that a donation will be made to FAER upon their deaths. ASA, in conjunction with its foundations, plans to develop a gift program encouraging the donation of securities and the establishment of bequests.

Editor-Publisher Agreement

The Foundation received its first contribution from the agreement among the authors, editors and publishers of the book Anesthesia: Biologic Foundations. This agreement stipulates that 1 percent of the sales of the book will be donated to FAER, half from author royalties and half from the publisher, Lippincott-Raven Publishers. We urge other authors and publishers of anesthesia texts to initiate similar agreements.

Panel Presentations

At the suggestion of Margaret Wood, M.B., the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA) President's Panel featured several former AUA/FAER-sponsored award recipients, and FAER President Francis M. James III, M.D., who spoke about the Foundation and its impact on research. The recipients presented findings from their AUA/FAER-sponsored studies and provided testimonials about the importance of the support received from both organizations. The panel provided an opportunity for AUA members to hear firsthand what their investment in these researchers had yielded, and it allowed the recipients to meet and thank their supporters. Dr. James also told the AUA members about the activities, achievements and goals of the Foundation and was available to answer questions and comments. Because of the success of this panel, FAER will explore similar programs with other sponsors. If your subspecialty society, component society, group or organization would like to participate in a similar program, please let us know and we will be happy to work with you.

Resident Scholars Program

Letters have been sent to 35 anesthesiology program department chairs inviting them to participate in this year's Glaxo Wellcome Resident Scholars Program to be held during the ASA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Board Member Numbers and Term Lengths

At the May FAER Board meeting, ASA President William D. Owens, M.D., spoke about the number and term lengths of board members. The discussion was prompted by the desire to maximize Board synergies and to provide greater continuity from year to year. The Board voted to increase the number of directors from 15 up to 20 and increase the term lengths from two three-year terms to three three-year terms with the option for a fourth term for those directors serving as officers of FAER. This proposal will be made as a recommendation to the ASA Board of Directors at its August meeting with action by the ASA House of Delegates in October.
