California Announces Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Arthur O. McGowan III, M.D., is the recipient of the 1998 California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his longtime distinguished service to CSA and the specialty of anesthesiology.

For more than two decades, Dr. McGowan has served the CSA in many ways. In 1975, when the state medical society became involved in a malpractice crisis, Dr. McGowan traveled to Sacramento to lobby on behalf of fellow physicians in California. Dr. McGowan continued to be involved with organized anesthesia politics both at the state and national levels for many years following this crisis. He served as a key contact for a number of legislators by visiting, writing and contacting them when issues of concern to anesthesiologists arose.

Dr. McGowan also chaired and served on numerous CSA committees. He held the offices of CSA President, Secretary and Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates. He also served on many ASA committees, including the ASA NEWSLETTER Editorial Board (Committee on Newsletter), on which he continues to serve. Dr. McGowan also held the position of Editor of the CSA Bulletin.
