Operating Room Management II Workshop Planned

The ASA Workshop on Operating Room Management II is designed for the individual interested in being directly involved in running an efficient operating room. This program will be held on April 10-11, 1999, at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.

The lectures will provide an overview of each of the major areas of significance to an operating room leader: human resources, information systems, finance, physical plant design and utilization, capital equipment, clinical quality and efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The faculty will discuss approaches and solutions to these important issues that are common to most operating room settings.

Peter Rock, M.D., is the program chair. He will speak on "Information Systems and Technology for Operating Room Management." William R. Furman, M.D., is the program co-chair. He will speak on "O.R. Physical Design and Planning" and "Quality Management and Process Improvements." The other faculty and their topics are:

  • Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum, M.D., "The PACU: Use of Fast-Track to Phase II Recovery" and "The O.R. of the Future";
  • Charles Beattie, M.D., Ph.D., "Sources of Conflict, Conflict Management and Conflict Resolution";
  • Joseph F. Foss, M.D., "Preoperative Evaluation Clinic";
  • Bruce L. Gewertz, M.D., "A Surgeon's Perspectives on O.R. Management";

  • J. Lance Lichtor, M.D., "Being Able to Pay for It All: Charge Capture, Revenue Enhancement" and "Regulatory Compliance: JCAHO and State Inspections";
  • Michael F. Roizen, M.D., "Should an Anesthesiologist Be in Charge of the O.R.s?";
  • Bev Weber, R.N., "Labor Management - A Report From the Front Lines" and "Capital Equipment: Selection, Prioritization, Service Cooperation and Budgeting";
  • Carey Weiss, M.D., "The 'Myth' of O.R. Utilization: What Should the Real Metric Be?" and "Capital Equipment Replacement: A New Algorithm."

ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education programs for physicians.

ASA designates this continuing medical education program for 12 credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Registration is suggested by March 9, 1999. Registration fees are $300 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and $650 for nonmembers.

A block of rooms is being held at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel until March 16, 1999. A room reservation form will be sent to registrants upon receipt of registration. The form should be returned to the hotel by the above date. The hotel is in downtown Chicago just off North Michigan Avenue, which makes it convenient to many of Chicago's museums, restaurants and shopping areas.
