| Operating Room
Management II Workshop Planned |
The ASA Workshop on Operating Room Management II is designed
for the individual interested in being directly involved in running
an efficient operating room. This program will be held on April
10-11, 1999, at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel in Chicago,
Illinois.
The lectures will provide an overview of each of the major areas
of significance to an operating room leader: human resources,
information systems, finance, physical plant design and utilization,
capital equipment, clinical quality and efficiency, and regulatory
compliance. The faculty will discuss approaches and solutions
to these important issues that are common to most operating room
settings.
Peter Rock, M.D., is the program chair. He will speak on "Information
Systems and Technology for Operating Room Management." William
R. Furman, M.D., is the program co-chair. He will speak on "O.R.
Physical Design and Planning" and "Quality Management and Process
Improvements." The other faculty and their topics are:
- Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum, M.D., "The PACU: Use of Fast-Track
to Phase II Recovery" and "The O.R. of the Future";
- Charles Beattie, M.D., Ph.D., "Sources of Conflict, Conflict
Management and Conflict Resolution";
- Joseph F. Foss, M.D., "Preoperative Evaluation Clinic";
- Bruce L. Gewertz, M.D., "A Surgeon's Perspectives on O.R.
Management";
- P. Allan Klock, Jr., M.D., "Fires, Floods, Gas Leaks and
Power Failure: Hazards and Disaster Preparedness" and "Critical
Paths and Patient Satisfaction";
- J. Lance Lichtor, M.D., "Being Able to Pay for It All: Charge
Capture, Revenue Enhancement" and "Regulatory Compliance: JCAHO
and State Inspections";
- Michael F. Roizen, M.D., "Should an Anesthesiologist Be in
Charge of the O.R.s?";
- Bev Weber, R.N., "Labor Management - A Report From the Front
Lines" and "Capital Equipment: Selection, Prioritization, Service
Cooperation and Budgeting";
- Carey Weiss, M.D., "The 'Myth' of O.R. Utilization: What
Should the Real Metric Be?" and "Capital Equipment Replacement:
A New Algorithm."
ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education
programs for physicians.
ASA designates this continuing medical education program for
12 credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award
of the American Medical Association.
Registration is suggested by March 9, 1999. Registration fees
are $300 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and
$650 for nonmembers.
A block of rooms is being held at the DoubleTree Guest Suites
Hotel until March 16, 1999. A room reservation form will be sent
to registrants upon receipt of registration. The form should be
returned to the hotel by the above date. The hotel is in downtown
Chicago just off North Michigan Avenue, which makes it convenient
to many of Chicago's museums, restaurants and shopping areas.
ABA Announces ...
ABA Solicits Directorate Nominations
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) has announced that
the Directorates now held by John R. Ammon, M.D., and Stephen
J. Thomas, M.D., end with the Annual Meeting of the Board in the
fall of 1999. Dr. Ammon is not eligible to serve another term.
In accordance with the policy established by the ASA representatives
to the Joint Committee at the ASA Annual Meeting on October 20,
1961, the component society secretaries and district directors
of ASA have been notified regarding the procedure to be followed
in submitting the name(s) of a candidate or candidates for the
guidance of the ASA representatives to the Joint Committee.
These names must be mailed to the ASA Executive Office, 520
N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, Illinois 60068-2573, with a
postal mailing date prior to March 1, 1999.
1998 Refresher Course Books Still Available
The 1998 Annual Refresher Course Lectures book is available
at a cost of $15 per copy. The Annual Refresher Course Lectures
book contains summaries of lectures that are presented at the
ASA Annual Meeting.
Anyone wishing to purchase copies should send a check payable
to the American Society of Anesthesiologists for $15 per book
