ABA Announces ...

Recertification Examination Dates for 2001

All certificates awarded by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) on or after January 1, 2000, will expire at the end of the 10th year following the year that the candidate passed the certifying examination.

The ABA recertification program is voluntary for ABA diplomates whose certification is not time-limited. ABA diplomates may take the examination by computer at more than 350 test centers during a two-week period, May 5-19, 2001. The ABA will inform applicants of the test sites when the list is available.

Diplomates may obtain an application after July 1, 2000, either on the ABA Web site or by writing the ABA at 4101 Lake Boone Trail, Suite 510, Raleigh, NC 27607-6507.

Applicants may submit their application to the ABA directly from the Web site. The ABA must receive completed recertification applications by November 15, 2000.

1999 Problem-Based Learning Discussions Books Still Available

The 1999 Problem-Based Learning Discussions (PBLD) book is still available at a cost of $15 per copy. The PBLD book presents the 105 cases discussed during the PBLD program at the 1999 ASA Annual Meeting. For educational purposes, it allows the learner to read each case and its objectives, review the model discussions and references and then embark upon an individual study program to identify and solve the problems posed in each case.

For U.S. orders, shipping and handling costs are included in the price of the publication. For international orders, contact the ASA Publications Department for shipping costs. Illinois residents must add 8.25 percent sales tax to the total amount. Payment must accompany all orders.

Workshop on Physician Well-Being Scheduled

The Workshop on Personal and Professional Well-Being departs from ASA's clinical offerings and focuses instead on the anesthesiologist as an individual. The program will be held on June 10-11, 2000, at the Eastland Hotel in Portland, Maine.

This program is designed for anesthesiologists interested in learning how to better manage their busy lives in order to move into leadership positions. It includes stress and health management for the individual, conflict resolution techniques for personnel management and pointers on leadership skills and styles that can aid in advancement in private or academic practice. The faculty will discuss approaches to all of the above and expects audience participation in the learning experience.

Saundra E. Curry, M.D., is the program chair. She will speak on "The How-Tos of Stress Management." The other faculty and their topics are:

  • Joanne M. Conroy, M.D., "The How-Tos of Stress Management";
  • Richard M. Flowerdew, M.D., "Conflicting Agendas in Changing Times" and "Utilizing Leadership Strategies to Solve Issues of Conflict";
  • Esther Freeman, Ph.D., "Irritable Growl Syndrome: Conflict in the Workplace ...Using Your Personality Type to Improve Communication" and "Conflicts Outside of the Workplace";
  • Charles H. McLeskey, M.D., "Characteristics of Effective Leaders" and "Utilizing Leadership Strategies to Solve Issues of Conflict";
  • Susan L. Polk, M.D., "The Road to Success in Leadership: Politics" and "Utilizing Leadership Strategies to Solve Issues of Conflict";
  • Michael A. E. Ramsay, M.D., "Stress -- How What You Don't Know Can Hurt You" and "Conflicts in the Workplace";
  • Stephan Thilen, M.D., "The RealAge™ Way to Take Care of Yourself" and "Exercise Your Way to Better Health";
  • Denham S. Ward, M.D., Ph.D., "Academic Achievement" and "Utilizing Leadership Strategies to Solve Issues of Conflict."

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has approved ASA to sponsor continuing medical education programs for physicians.
ASA designates this continuing medical education program for 12 credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
Registration is suggested by May 10, 2000. Registration fees are $300 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and $650 for nonmembers.
A block of rooms is being held at the Eastland Hotel until May 19, 2000. Reservation information will be sent to registrants upon receipt of registration. The Eastland is a classic downtown hotel within walking distance of "Old Port," museums and theaters. Portland is a working harbor town that blends modern urban attractions with historic architecture.
Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways are among the airlines that serve Portland.

'Calendars for Meetings' Booklet Entries Invited

Twice each year, in January and July, ASA publishes a "Calendars for Meetings" booklet that serves as an aid to all ASA members by providing information about continuing education courses, seminars and meetings in anesthesiology over the next five years. The booklet further helps to provide department chairs, program directors and component society officers with information that could prevent overlaps and conflicts in meeting schedules.

The next edition of "Calendars for Meetings" will be distributed with the July 2000 ASA NEWSLETTER. The deadline for submissions for the booklet is June 1, 2000. Entries must be submitted in writing and received at the ASA Executive Office by the deadline. Submissions will not be taken by telephone. The "Calendars for Meetings" booklets now include e-mail addresses, if available, with the contact information.

For further information or to obtain submission forms, contact the ASA Executive Office, Communications Department, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573; telephone (847) 825-5586; e-mail <communications@ASAhq.org>.
