| 2000 Art Exhibit:
"Faces" |
John T. Bonner,
M.D., Chair
Committee on Art Exhibits
When the ASA Annual Meeting Art Exhibit opens in the San Francisco
Moscone Center on Sunday, October 15, it will be the 33rd show
celebrating and exhibiting the face of creative vision and accomplishments
of ASA members and their families. Indeed "Faces" is the theme
of the event. Works in any medium inspired by the theme will be
grouped together and compete for ribbons.
Works in painting, photography, graphics, sculpture, crafts
and literature will be judged in categories that include the show
theme, "Faces." Junior exhibitors will also receive ribbons. Work
in any medium can be entered in the show theme category. Artists
should mail or bring their work to the exhibit area at the Moscone
Center to arrive no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 14.
It is preferable to mail pieces, which should be packed according
to the guidelines available from ASA. Please mark shipping containers
with your return address. Badges for those registering before
July 1 will identify them as an art exhibitor. These badges will
allow early entry into the exhibit area on Saturday morning if
works need to be brought to the show. To obtain entry forms and
guidelines, please write or contact John T. Bonner, M.D., Chair,
Committee on Art Exhibits, American Society of Anesthesiologists,
520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573. The show
will be displayed in a well-lit, accessible area with 24-hour
security. It is very important to arrange for pick-up of artwork
when the show closes on Tuesday, October 17. Judy Rabern, from
the Anesthesiology Department at Emory University, will again
greet and help artists in any way possible.
This year, the exhibit will be featured on the ASA Web site.
Check out the committee and last year's award winners. The logo
featuring the "Faces" theme will appear at the show and on T-shirts.
The committee encourages junior exhibitors to bring and enter
works of any medium; they will be displayed in the Junior Exhibitors'
section and bring a special flavor to the show.
This year, painter Jean Horton and Rene Schearer, Associate
Director of Admissions at the San Francisco Art Institute, have
agreed to judge the exhibit. John Stone, M.D., poet and Associate
Dean at Emory University Medical School, will again judge the
literature entries. The judges will award ribbons for first-place,
second-place, third-place and honorable mention in each category,
including the show theme. They will choose the Best of Show award
and the viewers (numbering more than 4,000 in 1999) will choose
the Viewers' Choice.
Every show is different. On Saturday morning when we unpack
and hang the show, the art exhibit committee's excitement will
be palpable. After the display is assembled and the committee
has left, I have a private showing when the judges tour the exhibit
and discuss their prize awards. I can then appreciate the craftsmanship
of sculpture and graphic arts, the subtlety of paintings and the
humor and deep emotions evoked by literature.
We on the committee are grateful for the pride and effort of
those who exhibit. Every year the judges comment on the talent
and energy of artists represented in the show. Their response
supports my belief that everyone is an artist: Art is a means
of using our own special abilities to express our emotions, experience
and vision. Accordingly, any medium in good taste will be accepted
for the exhibit. The works are always valuable gifts for ASA to
enjoy.
John T. Bonner, M.D., is Associate Professor
of Anesthesiology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta,
Georgia.
