House Energy and Commerce Committee leadership unveils SGR repeal and replacement legislation
On May 28, Republicans in the House Energy and Commerce Committee unveiled a legislative framework for the repeal and replacement of the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. The new system calls on medical organizations to work with the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to develop "quality measures for competency assessment." ASA is currently reviewing the draft legislative language and remains committed to repealing and replacing the flawed SGR mechanism with a system that more accurately reflects the cost of providing care to Medicare patients. Anesthesiology Calendar Note from the Wood Library-Museum
Bachrach's portrait of Paul M. Wood, M.D.
Just 50 years ago this month, Paul Meyer Wood, M.D. (1894-1963), succumbed at his home in Highland Falls, New York, to a massive heart attack while planning his fourth Chicagoland visit to organize the Wood Library-Museum
of ASA. Photographer Fabian Bachrach's studios created this oil-over-photograph memorial portrait of Wood for the latter's namesake museum.
