Cough Cure Circa 1885

Lloyd Manufacturing Co. of Albany, New York, printed this small advertisement card that touted the miraculous benefits of cocaine. Long before kids were urged to “Just Say No,” however, the United States government intervened after an epidemic of cocaine abuse in the late 19 th century. The Harrison Act of 1914 brought the sale and distribution of the drug under federal control, despite no constitutional provision for such action.
