Invitation
letter from Knights of Columbus, 1937
This letter from prominent Knights of Columbus
figure Joseph F. Lamb to the Society offered
an invitation to attend a meeting aimed at
fighting subversive movements in the United
States, including communism. It is uncertain
whether anyone from the Society attended
the meeting. It is notable, however, that
the meeting’s speaker, George Hermann
Derry, was a famed educator, scholar and
philosopher who did much to promote education
based on the liberal arts. His wife, Agnes
Mann, was the daughter of Horace Mann, the
oft-proclaimed father of public education
in the United States.
