Letter
to Dr. Wood from M.J. Seifert, M.D., 1938
Chicago surgeon M.J. Seifert,
M.D., made a big contribution to the specialty
by advising ASA’s early leaders on some seemingly
small semantic terminology. In this 1938
letter to Dr. Wood, Dr. Seifert explains
the difference between an “anesthetist” and
an “anesthesiologist.” In 1945,
Dr. Seifert’s advice came to fruition
as the Society’s name changed from
the American Society of Anesthetists to the
American Society of Anesthesiologists.
