• Acquire basic concepts of accounting and financial analysis

• Attain skills for budget development and subsequent integration in the management of an organization

• Be conversant with compliance and organizational issues, regulatory and other legal constraints, and interrelationships within the healthcare industry

• Identify and effectively use communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution techniques in a group-based environment

• Optimize contracting, fee schedule analysis and negotiation strategies through an understanding of basic managed care and integrated delivery system precepts

• Appreciate employment law issues, selection and retention issues and the relational cycle of human resources to overall functional business strategy

• Develop a marketing plan for your organization through a basic understanding of the principles of marketing

• Develop an understanding of business communications and technical report writing

• Gain an understanding of the role of promotional strategy in healthcare services marketing

The Conference Continues to Grow!
It will provide you with an overall orientation of the business skills needed to successfully manage the operations and functions of your healthcare organization or medical practice and will allow you to participate actively in its strategic success. This program is designed to teach the business skills that will help you to run a department, managing the challenges of a modern practice (private or academic), attain some of the language and perspective of the other side of the table and sharpen your entrepreneurial skills, or it can be taken purely for your self-edification. This program is designed for participants who have had no formal business education. The CBA program will give you some of the tools you need for a successful medical practice in areas that may not have been covered in medical school or during residency.



The CBA program will be presented through a mixture of live, on-site sessions and distance learning modules on DVD-ROM which are in Microsoft PowerPoint format. To enhance the learning experience with the interaction of fellow students, the CBA faculty will offer the course materials and list serves via the Internet to complement the on-site learning modules. The on-site classes will be held in Houston, Texas, on weekends beginning in March 2009. See detailed information about the course schedule here.

Module 1: Successful Leadership and Management
Competencies of physician executives; management functions and systems; learning organizations and leadership; transactional and transformational approaches; leadership styles; assessing personal leadership style; leadership language; developing leadership skills.

  • Use of leadership assessment instruments to assess both the transactional and transformational     leadership developmental needs


Module 2: Accounting and Financial Analysis of Healthcare Organizations
Principles of accounting; forms of business organization; financial statement analysis; healthcare ratio analysis.

Module 3: Financial Management and Budgeting
Financial decision-making; flexible budgeting and variance analysis; benchmarking, activity-based accounting, cash budgeting; fiduciary responsibilities.

Compliance guidelines; Stark guidelines; antitrust guidelines; healthcare legal issues.

Module 8: Integrated Delivery Systems
Structure of integrated delivery systems; basic managed care concepts; negotiation strategies; contract analysis; government and legislative impact on healthcare delivery systems.

Module 9: Business Communication — Integrated Marketing Communications in Healthcare
Technical report writing; common forms of business communications; health services marketing; integrated marketing communications; promotion strategy.

Module 10: Strategic Analysis and Business Plan Development
To conduct an internal and external analysis and SWOT profile (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of own practice or institutional component; to develop scenarios and strategies relative to environmental assessment niche, vision and mission; business plan development tied to SWOT analysis and needs assessment; the market and the competition; marketing plan; financial plan.

Registration Fees

The non-refundable registration fee of $3,500.00 for members and $4,200 for nonmembers is required to be registered for this program. CBA Alumni receive a 25% discount, based on space availability.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
The American Society of Anesthesiologists reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances. Registration fees are refundable only if ASA cancels the program. A minimum of 15 participants is required for the program to be held. A maximum of 100 registrants will be accepted. A full refund will be given if the program is canceled.

If you require special accommodation, please include a letter describing your needs and submit with your registration.

Hotel Rooms
A block of rooms will be reserved at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center in The Woodlands, Texas, for each on-site program. Hotel information will be provided to registrants.
