FAER Hosts a Half-Day Workshop at Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA) Annual Meeting

January 15, 2018

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) hosted a half-day workshop on innovation and entrepreneurship at the Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA) Annual Meeting on January 13, 2018.

Following a networking lunch, the two-hour program "Success and Failure Travel Together," included stories from four entrepreneurs who have attempted commercialization of clinically-driven ideas:

  • Early Innovation in Academia - Lara Brewer, M.S., Ph.D.
  • Innovation for the Established Academic - Jeff Mandel, M.D.
  • Building Long-Term Relationship - George Arndt, M.D.
  • Why "Can't Fail" Fails - Steven Shafer, M.D.

Using the entertaining format of Shark Tank™, "Swimming with Sharks - Technology Version" invited the participants to pitch their ideas to the panel of innovation experts and learn about the steps involved in the process of developing an idea to bring it to market.

FAER held an open call for contestants last year.  From numerous submissions, the following contestants were selected to present in front of the 'Shark' judges:

  • Orlando Hung, M.D., FRCPC - "Intravenous Fluid Flow Monitor"
  • Barrett Larson, M.D./Elizabeth Zambricki, M.D., M.B.A. - "Incorporating Augmented Reality Into Video Laryngoscopy"
  • Sean Runnels, M.D. - "Articulating Boogie with Intuitive Depth Control"
  • Arthur Wallace, M.D., Ph.D. - "Atapir: Non-Contact Remote Patient Monitor"

Congratulations to Sean Runnels, M.D., Assistant Professor at University of Utah, Department of Anesthesiology, winner of Swimming with Sharks: Technology Version, "Articulating Boogie with Intuitive Depth Control."
