Uel J. Alexis, Member-at-large, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
Uel J. Alexis first became interested in anesthesiology during his university studies at Johns Hopkins. The precipitating factor coming through his four years of research conducted under his mentor Dr. Solomon Snyder, the discoverer of the mu opiate receptor. In synergism, he enjoyed the intellectual challenge of higher level neurophysiology and neuropharmacology; in which he received a distinguished BA in Neuroscience with a Cellular & Molecular concentration. Afterwards, Uel returned to his native state of Texas to continue his medical journey at the University of Texas in San Antonio. He immediately joined the ASA to gather a deeper understanding of the field and its trends. Furthermore, he mentored under a neuroanesthesiologist at his institution that exposed him to many interesting cases highlighting the dynamic field of anesthesiology. Between his first and second year of medical school, Uel participated in a surgery/anesthesiology preceptorship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The following winter break he was granted a scholarship for a preceptorship in neurosurgery/neuroanesthesia in Trinidad & Tobago. These experiences helped confirm his interest in anesthesiology. Likewise, he returned to his school promoting the field by becoming involved in several leadership positions in his school anesthesiology interest group. Currently he holds the vice-president office.
Mr. Alexis’ career goal is to become a licensed anesthesiologist. His ambition is to advance the field through policy and research. At the moment he is working on a clinical research project concerning the efficiency of peripheral nerve blocks. Under his new office within the ASA Medical Student Governing Delegation he plans to initiate proposals and programs aimed at fostering student involvement and novel ideas that can invoke deeper commitment and purpose to the ideal pursuit of excellence in anesthesiology.
