Rep. Greenwood Offers MICRA-type Reform Bill

February 6, 2003

On February 6, Representative Jim Greenwood introduced a bill (H.R. 5) designed to cap non-compensatory and punitive damages awarded in professional liability lawsuits. The bill closely follows the terms of the measure passed by the House last year, and is principally based on the California MICRA statute widely supported by physicians. ASA President Cottrell sent a letter of support to Mr. Greenwood's office for use at a press conference announcing the bill's introduction. Early House passage of the bill is expected following hearings by the Judiciary and Energy and Commerce committees.
