Two New ASA Committees Forming for 2010

April 10, 2009

The ASA Board of Directors recently approved a recommendation to create two new committees in the Section on Society Subspecialties to focus on the practice of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesia and neuroanesthesia.  The Bylaws amendments necessary to implement this recommendation will require approval by the House of Delegates in October.  Presuming that this approval is likely and wishing to permit the new committees a full year to pursue their objectives, Dr. Alexander A. Hannenberg is now soliciting nominations for appointment to these committees with a term commencing at the close of the 2009 House of Delegates. The committee members should be diverse and reflect a balance of full-time academic subspecialists and general practice anesthesiologists with a commitment to the subspecialty practice.

The duties of the committees as they appear in the draft bylaws amendments are as follows:

Committee on Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia

a.   Promote interest and investigation in the fields of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesia.
b.   Review significant developments in the fields of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesia and devise and implement programs to present this information to the membership.
c.   Maintain liaison with other organizations in these fields.

Committee on Neuroanesthesia

a.   Promote interest and investigation in the field of neuroanesthesia and in the mechanism of action and effects of anesthetic agents.
b.   Review significant developments in the field of neuroanesthesia and devise and implement programs to present this information to the membership.
c.   Maintain liaison with other organizations in this field.
