The October 31 edition of The New York Times features an article by Kate Murphy, “What Pilots Can Teach Hospitals About Patient Safety,” including remarks on implementation by ASA members David M. Gaba, M.D., Peter J Pronovost, M.D. and Timothy J. Dowd, M.D.
The article looks at how a growing number of hospitals and healthcare providers are trying to learn from aviation accidents and the steps airlines have taken to prevent them. Several major healthcare institutions have hired professional pilots to train critical-care staff members on how to apply aviation safety principles to their work and improve patient safety.
