Anesthesiology comes out of hiding in U.S. News & World Report

The July 12 issue of U.S. News & World Report, which is the annual Best Hospitals issue, profiles the specialty of anesthesiology as one of three “hidden specialties.” Reporter Thomas Hayden followed the anesthesiology staff at the University of Chicago Hospitals through a typical day, and deduced that “in many hospitals, anesthesiologists are becoming the human face of surgical care.” See the online version here. (Please note that in the printed magazine, a photo appeared with an incorrect caption reading, “A University of Chicago nurse anesthetist administers epidural steroid.” The caption should have identified the professional as physician anesthesiologist Magdalena Anitescu, MD, PhD.  U.S. News has published a correction as follows:

7-19-04 Correction: In "New Needs, New Drugs" [July12], a photo caption should have described Magdalena Anitescu, shown administering a pain-killing injection, as a board-certified anesthesiologist, not a nurse anesthetist.
