Safety and Bariatric Surgery
As part of the 2005 Doctors Day Observance, ASA distributed
the video news release (VNR) “Patient Safety
and Bariatric Surgery.”
The VNR was distributed to more than
800 individual television stations across the country
and features Martin Nitsun, M.D., Evanston Northwestern
Healthcare, David R. Danielson, M.D., Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and ASA President Eugene P. Sinclair.
In this year’s
Doctors Day VNR, the ASA explores a growing population
identified as being at higher risk for medical conditions—seriously
overweight children and adults. The VNR will serve
as an educational snapshot of considerations for obese
patients undergoing bariatric (weight loss) surgery
and explore how the successful outcomes for these patients
depend on the vigilance and patient safety efforts
of anesthesiologists.
This is the seventh VNR
produced by the ASA. Other topics include office-based
surgery, pain medicine, sleep apnea, herbal medicine,
pediatric anesthesia and over-the-counter drug abuse.
