Operating Room Simulation Helps Doctors Prepare for Natural or Man-Made Disasters

As part of the 2006 Doctors Day observance, ASA distributed the video news release (VNR),”Operating Room Simulation Helps Doctors Prepare for Natural or Manmade Disasters.”

The VNR was distributed to more than 800 individual television stations across the country and  features ASA member Jill Antoine, M.D., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, ASA President Orin F. Guidry, M.D., ASA member James Hicks, M.D., Hurricane Katrina first responder, and Richard Zane, M.D., emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston version of VNR). To illustrate the training and planning that doctors participate in to help prepare for disaster response locally and nationally, the VNR includes footage of a disaster scenario simulation at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston. It offers recommendations for families to help them prepare for disasters, and an “Anesthesia & Me” Health Information Checklist.

This is the eighth VNR produced by ASA. Other topics include office-based surgery, pain medicine, sleep apnea, herbal medicine, pediatric anesthesia, over-the-counter drug abuse, and patient safety and bariatric surgery.
