OR Management is a relatively new area for residents and experienced anesthesiologists. OR management wasn’t taught in residency programs before 2000, so the vast majority of practicing anesthesiologists have not been exposed to the concepts. This course could not have come at a better time. The changing environment of health care delivery, advanced technology, and downward pressure on reimbursements are forcing anesthesiologists to reexamine the profession. Expanding anesthesiologists’ skill set to include management skills is the most logical opportunity to increase the value proposition for the entire enterprise in which they work and secure the profession for the future.

Basic accounting terms, OR management metrics and the application of a rationally-ordered set of priorities are just some of the topics that are needed to begin a study of OR management and make daily operational decisions that have a systematic approach to improving patient outcomes, increasing productivity, predicting work hours, and cutting costs. The purpose of this 1-hour course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of OR management to residents and experienced anesthesiologists who are interested in expanding their clinical practice into management.
