This Refresher Course describes how positioning anesthetized or sedated patients for surgery and diagnostic procedures is an underappreciated, yet extremely important clinical practice that dramatically impacts surgical and patient outcomes. Anecdotal, retrospective, and (less often) prospective reports suggest that perioperative injuries traditionally considered to be associated with intraoperative positioning are often multifactorial.
