Patient Safety Highlights 2016 - Structured Handoffs Improve the Care of the Critically Ill

This pro-con will examine challenges in patient safety that occur during handoff of a critically ill peroperioperative patient. It will also discuss the concept and implementation of a structured handoff protocol with integration into electronic medical record. Lastly, this panel will review the evidence for and against the argument that a structured handoff protocol reduces errors and improves patient safety.

These patient safety activities help fulfill the patient safety CME requirement for Part 2 of the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® (MOCA) of The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA requirements.

CERTIFIED PROFESSIONALS IN PATIENT SAFETY (CPPS)
This activity meets the criteria of the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety for 1.0 CPPS CE hours.
