Patient Safety Highlights 2016 - Coming Soon to a Labor and Delivery Unit Near You: What You Need to Know About the National Partnership for Maternal Safety

THIS IS AN ONLINE ACTIVITY. Hard copies are not available.

This 60 minute panel will introduce participants to the recently-formed National Partnership for Maternal Safety (NPMS), a multidisciplinary group with representatives from stakeholders in maternal health including the ASA, SOAP, ACOG, the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, the CDC and the Joint Commission. Its mission is to improve maternal safety through multidisciplinary collaboration and culture change. Dr. Grobman, a nationally-recognized obstetrician and maternal fetal medicine specialist in Chicago will introduce the rationale for the formation of the NPMS: preventable morbidity and mortality. Dr. Smiley, who sat on the working group that wrote the NPMS patient safety bundle addressing thromboembolic disease, will present that bundle, and include risks and benefits of neuraxial anesthetic procedures in patients on pharmacologic anticoagulants. Dr. Scavone will present the NPMS patient safety bundle on severe hypertensive disease, emphasizing the anesthesiologist’s role.
