ASA Member Benefit Spotlight:
The Future of Anesthesia

ASA’s mission of advancing the practice and securing the future of anesthesiology is engrained in each initiative put forth. Here’s how ASA is supporting the specialty to create positive changes on behalf of members.

Furthering the Perioperative Brain Health Initiative: In June, ASA held a multi-stakeholder meeting with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) in Washington, D.C. to discuss the science of perioperative neurocognitive disorders and prevention strategies to better meet the needs of patients 65 years and older undergoing surgery and their families. As a result, a formal call to action has been developed which solicits patients, providers, hospitals, regulatory agencies and funders to promote brain health before, during and after surgery by following several identified actions.

Combatting the opioid epidemic: ASA is working with numerous regulatory agencies, health care organizations and other stakeholders, including U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, M.D., M.P.H., who is a 15-year ASA member leading national efforts to end the crisis. ASA also partnered with Premier Inc. and its network of hospitals to create a national pilot program to reduce patient harm from opioid misuse, dependence and addiction. Through collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the organization has also worked to develop strategies for safe and effective alleviation of pain and optimal opioid stewardship, which includes consensus recommendations around postoperative opioid prescriptions, specifying maximum thresholds.

Promoting the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH): This patient-centered, physician-led, team-based model of care solidifies the physician anesthesiologist’s value in the procedural experience—from the time of the decision for surgery until patient recovery—to deliver the highest quality care. In 2018, the third iteration of the PSH Learning Collaborative 2020 launched. In addition, Cases from the PSH: A Journey to Improve Quality and Patient Safety, an online education series, will launch in December.

Addressing drug shortages: ASA co-wrote a large bipartisan letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, shared a drug shortage survey of its membership with the FDA, planned the ASA 2018 Drug Shortage Summit and urged Congress' transparency regarding drug shortages.

Leadership development through the ACHE Partnership: ASA and the American College of Healthcare Executives are offering leadership development courses to members who want to take their career to the next level and become a leader in their practice or organization.

Each of these initiatives directly affects the specialty at large; ASA will continue to discuss these topics on behalf of 53,000 members to enhance the future of the specialty for years to come.
