First Anesthesiologist Elected to Tennessee Senate
On November 6, Steve Dickerson, M.D., ASA member and president of the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists, was elected to serve as state senator for Tennessee’s 20th District. Dr. Dickerson is the first anesthesiologist elected to the Tennessee State Senate and will be one of three physicians serving in Tennessee’s upcoming legislative session.
Dr. Dickerson, along with family, friends, supporters and staff, knocked on over 60,000 doors and made over 100,000 voter contacts throughout the campaign.
Dr. Dickerson is a practicing anesthesiologist and a Delegate to the ASA House of Delegates. At this time, ASA is aware of one other anesthesiologist, ASA President John Zerwas, M.D., serving as a member of a state legislature.
Dr. Zerwas is currently serving his third term in the Texas House of Representatives.
University of Colorado Authorizes New Master’s of Science in Anesthesiology Program
On November 14, the University of Colorado Board of Regents approved by 6-1 the creation of a new Master’s of Science in Anesthesiology program within the University of Colorado School of Medicine. ASA Director for Colorado, Randall Clark, M.D., reported this is the first anesthesiologist assistant educational program in the western region of the United States.
Dr. Clark credited Thomas Henthorn, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, with the new program’s approval. Substantial support for the program also came from the school of medicine dean, provost, chancellor and university president offices.
The Colorado Association of Nurse Anesthetists (CoANA) argued against the creation of the new program based on its analysis of cost to the university, what representatives of CoANA described as the program’s likely impact on current nurse anesthetists in Colorado, and the perceived need to focus on improving existing nurse anesthetist training programs.
The University of Colorado will now focus its efforts on obtaining accreditation for the new program, which is planned to begin with the 2013-14 school year.
