A Message From the Governance Support Unit: Announcement of Candidates for Elected Office
In accordance with section 2.6 of the Administrative Procedures, ASA is pleased to announce that notices of intent to run for elected offices are being accepted through Monday, July 1, 2013. Any prospective candidate for ASA office may send a Notice of Intent to run for a specified office. “Job Descriptions” for each office are available from the Governance Support Unit of the Executive Office. Prospective office-seekers are encouraged to obtain the relevant job description(s) as each contains not only the duties of each office, but the inherent time commitment involved.

Notices of Intent are requested to be submitted to Governance Support Unit staff at governance@ASAhq.org. Each notice submitted should be accompanied by a Web-ready photograph, an abbreviated (one-page) curriculum vitae (CV) and a Statement of Candidacy. The Governance Support Unit will compile a list of candidates submitted. This list will be published in the September NEWSLETTER, the Handbook for Delegates and will be posted, along with the photo, CV and statement to the Candidates for Office page of the ASA website.

An announcement of candidacy does not constitute a formal nomination to an office, nor is it a prerequisite for being nominated. Nominations are formally made at the first session of the House of Delegates for all candidates as prescribed by the ASA Bylaws.

Nominations Sought for Media Award
ASA members have appeared in countless broadcast, online and print media placements over the past year. To recognize these placements, the Philip S. Weintraub Media Award is presented each year to members of the press who have effectively educated the public about the specialty of anesthesiology.

The Committee on Communications is now accepting entries for the 2013 media award. ASA members are encouraged to nominate local or national media placements from broadcast (television or radio), online and print (newspaper or magazine) outlets.

Last year’s winners include:
n Courtney Humphries from MIT Technology Review for her January/February 2012 feature article “The Mystery Behind Anesthesia.” n Benita Zahn, M.S. at WNYT NewsChannel 13 for her March 29, 2012 segment “Anesthesia Shortages.” n Katherine Harmon of Scientific American for her October 3, 2012 article “What Is Propofol – and How Could It Have Killed Michael Jackson?
The 2013 Philip S. Weintraub Media Award recipients will receive a plaque presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2013 annual meeting on October 13, 2013 in San Francisco.

The deadline for all nominations that aired or were pub-lished between October 1, 2012 and September 1, 2013 is September 9, 2013. All entries should be sent to the ASA Chair of the Committee on Communications, John F. Dombrowski, M.D., at communications@asahq.org or 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573.
