State Beat: Anesthesiology Promoted at NCSL Jason Hansen, M.S., J.D.

This August, more than 5,000 state-level legislators, legislative staff, government officials, business represen-tatives, and association representatives from around the country assembled in Atlanta to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit. The NCSL Legislative Summit is the largest gathering of state legislators in the nation.

For the past 13 years, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has participated at NCSL as an exhibitor. This year, ASA again represented physician anesthesiologists at the joint physician booth “Physicians Advocating for Patients.” The exhibit booth included representatives of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Dermatology, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

While at NCSL, Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists President (GSA) Jay Johansen, M.D., Ph.D., and GSA lobbyist Jet Toney, joined ASA staff in interacting with state legislators and legislative staff at the exhibit booth.

The NCSL Legislative Summit provides ASA with a unique opportunity to increase the visibility of physician anesthesiologists and educate state legislators about physician anesthesiologists and their achievements in advancing patient safety, as well as other issues facing physicians. State legislators and staff appreciated the opportunity to speak with ASA and GSA representatives as well as others at the joint booth who represented their respective medical specialties. ASA will begin planning for NCSL’s 2014 Legislative Summit, which will be held in Minneapolis from August 19-22, 2014.

Jason Hansen, M.S., J.D. is ASA Director of State Affairs.
