Four years ago, Kara rolled her ankle, fracturing the talus bone in her foot and tearing ligaments. Six weeks and one surgery later, she was told she developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. Kara experienced agonizing burning sensations in her foot and leg and was unable to go about her daily life. She had to quit her job and has been unemployed for four years. Kara was recently fitted with what’s called an adaptive spinal cord stimulator, which sends out pulsed signals to targeted areas of the spinal cord while adapting to your body’s movements. Just months before, she had almost no function in her foot.
