The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an educational and professional association of over 36,000 physicians and scientists practicing or otherwise interested in the specialty of anesthesiology. Its purpose is to raise the standards of medical practice of anesthesiology by fostering and encouraging education, research and scientific progress in the specialty and to improve the care of the anesthetized patient. The Society's political action committee -- ASAPAC -- is a voluntary political organization established in 1991 to help anesthesiologists participate in the nation’s political process in conjunction with their colleagues. The committee seeks to support candidates for federal elected office, including physician candidates, who support ASA’s goals of advancing the specialty and improving patient care.
